Night Nurse

So, I survived my first shift as a real nurse, with my own patients and no instructor or buddy nurse to be seen. And it was pretty cool. It's wierd being awake for the twelve hours between 7 pm and 7 am. It's not something I'm used to, and I thought I would hate it, but oddly enough, I actually enjoy it. There's something about being awake when most everyone else you know is asleep, it's kind of like some witching hour thing. I can't really explain it. Plus, when we have babies with hyperbilirubinemia on the unit and they're on the bilibeds, the whole room glows this cool blue. If you're ever driving by the PLC at night, look up to the third floor for eerie blue lights. I'll bet it would looks pretty awesome.

I don't think I could ever go back to working on an adult care unit. I can deal with crying kids and breastfeeding and breast pumps and all that, but I don't think I could ever go back to changing attends and dealing with whiny adults. I had this one little boy who cried every time I came near him but when he was leaving to go home, he gave me a big hug. It was awesome. Those are the moments that really make it all worthwhile. Sigh.

Guess what one of the best parts of my shift was on Sunday night/Monday morning? Driving home. The new Mazda is so awesome. I love it. It says "Hello!" when I turn it on (yeah baby!) and looks totally awesome at night with the blue and red illumination of the dash and audio console. And black looks totally money. I was worried for a little bit that the black was a mistake but no worries! It's beautiful, even though it's a bitch to keep clean. I'm hoping to take it for a bit of a cruise to the mountains this weekend. So, if anyone wants to come to Canmore or something, let me know.

Well, I hope those of you indulging in Death by Chocolate tomorrow have a wicked time! And always go for the chocolate ravioli. You haven't lived until you've had chocolate ravioli. Which I guess is a moot point since you're going there to die due to chocolate consumption anyways. Oh well.

Ah... yes. Those "wee small hours of the morning" are indeed magical. There's a sort of.... I don't know, sleepless mania about it maybe? At any rate, I'm glad you're enjoying the shifts. Creepy blue lights are always a plus.

Alas, there was no chocolate ravioli. None that I could see anyways. But there was chocolate banana bread, and lots of mousses, and a fountain with the turn-hard-and-crackly sort of chocolate, AND a really delicious crème brulée. Which, although heavenly, did NOT contain chocolate. I think we'll have to write an angry letter to the mgmt.

I was thinking about going to the Death by Chocolate thing on Thursday after convocation but now that I hear there is no chocolate ravioli... No dice!

When I mentioned it to my mom, she couldn't grasp that it was all chocolate. No meat. Just chocolate. Hence the "death by chocolate"...
